my favorite anime of all time. it's a coming of age story and it's kind of weird sometimes, but that's exactly what growing up is like. it's the second anime i've ever watched in the 2nd grade on toonami. rewatching it as a teenager changed my life when i could actually understand what everything meant. i ended up watching the newer seasons but they felt off, it was missing all of the style that the original had. i own the FLCL manga, the art in it is amazing too.

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION 1995

the FIRST anime i've ever watched back on toonami. i distinctly remember the first episode because they aired it literally every single weekend. it's an anime about the human condition, and the ways different characters deal with self hatred (most of them shutting each other out). i saw bits and pieces on toonami but ended up watching the whole thing one day in middle school, genuinely messed me up for a few days.

MOB PSYCHO 100 2018

genuinely a masterpiece. if you've seen it then you already know, but every single aspect of it is amazing, especially the story and animation. it's about coming to terms with your mistakes and growing into the person you want to be. ie expressing yourself and working towards bettering yourself. "if everyone is not special, maybe you can be what you want to be"

RE:ZERO 2016

i watched re:zero at the start of high school, a few months after it started airing. it's about a boy, subaru natsuki, getting transported to another world, there he recieves a curse that lets him load a save point every time he dies. i believe subaru is genuinely one of the most relatable characters ever made. he isn't strong, or particularly smart, he has countless flaws and lots of self hatred. but i think that's what makes his character so great, because despite all that he still pushes forward and tries to better himself.

YOUJO SENKI 2017

i watched youjo senki as it was airing. the story isn't very deep or meaningful, it's about a psychopathic businessman getting reincarnated to another world where he becomes a child soldier in a fantasy combination of ww1 and ww2 (with magic) in a bet with god. honestly it's just fun, the fights and music are incredible. i will say though the sounds are the most BASS BOOSTED things i've ever heard in my entire life.
